Dillon Brooks Holds Back Praise For Victor Wembanyama: “He’s Tall, That’s Really It”

Despite being only preseason, Wembanyama is meeting high expectations and validating the immense buzz around him. Many fans and experts are lauding his skills, but some, including the notorious NBA trash-talker Dillon Brooks, aren’t on the bandwagon regarding the young San Antonio Spurs talent.

The Houston Rockets recently faced off with the San Antonio Spurs, with the Spurs clinching the win and Wembanyama chalking up 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks on 30.0% shooting from the field in 21 minutes of play. Brooks, when probed about Wembanyama, briefly commented on his height alone.

“He’s tall, that’s really it.”

This kind of comment is typical of Brooks, who is known in the NBA as a controversial personality who isn’t hesitant to speak aggressively about his opponents. Brooks’ statement, however, goes against the common opinion about Wembanyama.

Notably, even though he’s just a 19-year-old rookie and hasn’t played an official regular season game yet, Bleacher Report has already positioned him as the 63rd best player in the NBA. This puts him ahead of Brooks’ young teammates like Jalen Green (#80), Alperen Sengun (#82) and Jabari Smith Jr. (#94).

Per Bleacher Report:

“In France’s top pro league, Victor Wembanyama was able to finish second in scoring and first in rebounding and shot-blocking at 18-19 years old.

The No. 1 pick isn’t going to need much time to make an impact and put up numbers with his 7’4″ size, 8’0″ wingspan, special mobility and obvious shot-making skill, especially with another high-usage role and a better passing point guard in Tre Jones.”

As the No. 1 overall pick, Wembanyama is projected to be a franchise-altering talent and a future all-time great. With such a title comes immense pressure, Wembanyama has big shoes to fill, but many are watching and hoping.
