Klay Thompson’s time with the Dallas Mavericks could be nearing an uncertain conclusion, with the veteran guard reportedly receptive to returning to Los Angeles if an opportunity becomes available.
According to Christian Clark of The Athletic, Dallas has explored the trade market for Thompson but has not yet found an agreement. Thompson is entering the final season of the three-year contract he signed with the Mavericks in 2024, making him a logical candidate for a move as Dallas evaluates its roster and attempts to resolve a numbers crunch before the regular season.
Clark reported that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and continues to own a home. The report did not identify either the Lakers or Clippers as an active trade partner, and there is currently no indication that serious negotiations with a Los Angeles team are underway.
The Miami Heat have also been frequently mentioned around the league as a possible landing spot. Thompson’s movement shooting and championship experience could appeal to a team seeking additional spacing, but Miami’s reported interest has not produced a completed transaction either.
At this stage of his career, Thompson is no longer expected to carry an offense as he once did with Golden State. He can still offer perimeter shooting, postseason experience and the ability to operate without dominating the ball. His value will depend heavily on role, health and whether a new team can place him in lineups that minimize his defensive limitations.
A return to Southern California would carry personal significance. Thompson was born in Los Angeles and lived in the area during part of his childhood before his family moved to Oregon. It would also place him in a major market during the closing stage of a career that already includes four NBA championships and five All-Star selections.
