Victor Wembanyama dressed up for Halloween, but it was the Minnesota Timberwolves who experienced the real nightmare.
The San Antonio Spurs superstar delivered another spectacular two-way performance on Saturday night, erupting for a season-high 43 points, seven rebounds, six blocks and four assists to lead his team to a 121-111 victory over Minnesota at Frost Bank Center.
Wembanyama shot 17-of-34 from the field, including three three-pointers, reaching the 40-point mark for the 10th time in his regular-season career. His 34 field-goal attempts also represented a new career high, demonstrating just how aggressively the 22-year-old attacked Minnesota’s defense throughout the evening.
@opencourtTHE WEMBY SHOW 🤯 What an unreal game by Victor Wembanyama. He finished with 43 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 blocks. So many highlights 😮💨♬ original sound – OpenCourt-Basketball
And he made sure to entertain the crowd along the way. During the first half, Wembanyama produced one of the game’s most memorable highlights, throwing the ball off the backboard to himself for a spectacular finish that helped San Antonio establish an early double-digit advantage.
But despite playing without injured stars Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert, Minnesota responded with a 16-0 run during the second quarter and entered halftime holding a narrow 61-60 lead.
Wembanyama and the Spurs immediately regained control after the break, opening the third quarter with a 13-4 run.
The French superstar continued dominating offensively while making life miserable for Minnesota’s players around the basket. His combination of extraordinary length, timing and mobility turned seemingly open scoring opportunities into blocked shots and disrupted possessions.
Perhaps the defining sequence came when Wembanyama rejected Jonathan Kuminga’s three-point attempt before racing downcourt for a powerful two-handed dunk that brought his scoring total to 40.
Dylan Harper provided outstanding support with 25 points and six assists, while De’Aaron Fox also contributed 20 points.
For Minnesota, Ayo Dosunmu led the way with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Kuminga and Jaden McDaniels finished with 19 points apiece.
The victory extended San Antonio’s winning streak to four games, improving its record to 4-2 after a difficult opening to the season.
But the biggest story was once again Wembanyama. At 7-foot-4, the Frenchman possesses physical tools that already make him one of basketball’s most intimidating defenders. What makes him truly extraordinary is his ability to combine that defensive dominance with the offensive versatility of a perimeter scorer.
Forty-three points and six blocked shots in the same game are another reminder that Wembanyama is capable of influencing basketball in ways few players ever have. On Halloween night, Victor Wembanyama didn’t need a costume to become the most terrifying player on the court.
