Team USA came into the 2023 FIBA World Cup expected to win gold, but their hopes were dashed after a semifinal loss to Germany and a defeat in the third-place match against Canada, leaving them without not only gold but also without a single medal.

This marks the second consecutive World Cup where the United States has come up empty-handed. This has led to a wave of disappointment and criticism from fans and the wider community, raising questions about what went wrong for Team USA’s World Cup run.

NBA veteran Rudy Gay expressed his thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter, following Team USA’s loss to Canada. The 37-year-old forward asserted that neither coaching nor talent were to blame, hinting at what the real issue might have been.

“Nothing to do with coaching or whether it’s a B or C team. These other countries have players that would die to be there, we have players that where [sic] chosen,” Gay tweeted.
