Former Phoenix Suns Scout Reveals Why The Suns Drafted Deandre Ayton Over Luka Doncic And Trae Young

DeAndre Ayton was drafted as the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. In hindsight, that pick wasn’t anything less than good considering that several mock drafts expected Ayton to go first in the loaded draft class.

Ayton had a promising rookie year with the Suns and has been a double-double guy ever since he stepped his foot in the NBA. However, three years since the 2018 NBA Draft, everyone would agree that the two best players thus far turned out to be Luka Doncic and Trae Young.

As one might expect, questions as to why the Suns didn’t pick Doncic or Young will surface as the two polarizing players continue to separate themselves from the rest of their peers. Appearing in an interview, former Suns scout Antonio Williams now shed a light on Suns’ decision to draft Ayton ahead of the others.

“So with DeAndre one of the things was you look at the things that he does that… he can just roll out of the bed and do it at his size. When you combine the athleticism and the dexterity and the agility with his size, they’re just things that he can roll out of bed and do.”

“Of course we knew Luka was going to be great, of course we knew Trae Young was going to be great. But when we were looking at DeAndre, again, there were just things that we felt like that he could just inherently roll out of bed and do. That we didn’t have on our roster.”
