Chris Webber Recalls 2002 WCF Against The Lakers: “The Year We Got Cheated… We Should Have Won The Championship”

It’s been almost two decades since the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Sacramento Kings in the 2002 Western Conference Finals, yet the controversy surrounding that series has never died down.

Several years ago, former referee Tim Donaghy came out and claimed that the referees indeed influenced the outcome of the series, specifically Game 6 wherein the Lakers attempted 40 free throws to Sacramento’s 25. However, Donaghy’s allegations were immediately denied by former NBA commissioner David Stern.

Even so, the pill on this one is too difficult to swallow, that even until now, former Kings star Chris Webber maintains a stance that his team certainly got cheated and robbed of a championship in the 2002 playoffs.

“I think it’s the, you know, I guess it’s the Lakers. I don’t know if that was 2002 or 03. That’s the year we got cheated I think in Game 6… The year Robert Horry hit a crazy shot… It was that year. It was that year. You know, me and Kobe used to talk about it all the time. (…) That was the team. We should have won the championship, and we didn’t because we didn’t follow through after being disappointed in Game six.”
