Doc Rivers On Why He Didn’t Honor Dwyane Wade Like He Honored Dirk Nowitzki

When the Dallas Mavericks played the Los Angeles Clippers for the last time this season in Los Angeles, Clippers coach Doc Rivers called a timeout, grabbed the announcers microphone at the end of the 4th quarter, and paid his respect to Dirk Nowitzki. Everyone loved the gesture, including Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle, who said:

“One of the greatest things I’ve seen. It’s an original. I’ve never seen that. Doc is special. One of the people I respect the most. I know Dirk was touched by it.”

While Nowitzki isn’t sure if he’ll retire after the season, another superstar in this league is – Dwyane Wade.

But Wade didn’t get the ‘Dirk treatment’ from Rivers, who now was asked why. Doc explained:

“I was thinking at the end of the game, man, Dwyane Wade is about to retire and it’s like we didn’t notice. But they were winning and Dwyane had like 30 that game so I said, no honor for Dwyane that night.”

The Heat beat the Clippers 121-98, that night, and Dwyane Wade scored 25 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists.
