LeBron James has made plenty of perfectly timed moves in his career. This one may be the most fatherly.
Less than 24 hours after the Lakers fully guaranteed Bronny James’ $2.3 million contract for the 2026-27 season, LeBron informed the franchise that he will not return to Los Angeles. The timing immediately became the story. Bronny’s roster spot was secured, his money was protected, and only then did LeBron make his own exit official.
That is not proof of a grand master plan. But in the NBA, timing is never ignored, especially when LeBron is involved. The Lakers had until June 29 to decide whether to fully guarantee Bronny’s deal, and they chose to keep him on the roster. One day later, the franchise’s biggest name was heading for the door.
For Los Angeles, it marks the end of an era. LeBron arrived in 2018, won the 2020 championship, broke records, shared the floor with his son, and gave the Lakers one of the strangest, most historic chapters of his career. Now the team moves forward without him, while Bronny remains part of the roster.
Maybe it was business. Maybe it was family. Most likely, it was both.
Either way, the timing was impossible to miss.
