Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has long been considered one of the most electrifying talents in the NBA. With his high-flying dunks, clutch performances, and magnetic presence, many fans and analysts have pegged him as a future face of the league. But in an interview this week, Morant made it clear: that was never his goal.
“There’s a lot that comes with that… I play basketball for the love of the game, not to be the face of the NBA,” Morant told Nick Friedell of The Athletic. “Obviously, I hear that a lot. I don’t put no pressure on it. I just go out and just play my game. Me pretty much just going out there and doing that had me in those conversations. Obviously, people have their own opinions, but I really don’t care for it too much”.
Morant’s comments come at a pivotal moment in his career. After a turbulent stretch marked by suspensions and injuries, the 26-year-old guard is working to reestablish himself, not as a brand ambassador, but as a basketball player first.
Since entering the league as the No. 2 overall pick in 2019, Morant has been a highlight machine. He won Rookie of the Year, earned All-Star selections, and led Memphis to multiple playoff appearances. But with fame came scrutiny, especially after off-court incidents in 2023 led to a 33-game suspension.
Now, Morant is focused on reclaiming his rhythm and letting his play speak for itself. His statement is a reminder that not every star wants the crown, and that greatness doesn’t always require center stage.
