The fallout from Jaylen Brown’s controversial departure from the Boston Celtics continues to produce new headlines. This time, former Celtics player and current television analyst Brian Scalabrine has added another explosive claim to the story, suggesting that Brown himself pushed for a trade and hoped to land with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio’s The Starting Lineup on Monday, Scalabrine claimed that Brown had privately approached Boston’s front office with a series of demands before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in July.
According to Scalabrine, Brown essentially presented the Celtics with an ultimatum: Meet his demands or trade him.
The former NBA champion went even further, alleging that Brown specifically wanted to join Milwaukee and had contacted other players about potentially teaming up there.
Scalabrine also questioned Brown’s public reaction to the trade, suggesting that the forward’s subsequent expressions of disappointment were difficult to reconcile with his alleged desire to leave Boston.

The allegations are intriguing considering the Celtics’ unsuccessful pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier this summer. Boston reportedly offered Brown and two unprotected first-round picks to Milwaukee in exchange for the Greek superstar, but the Bucks ultimately accepted a package from the Miami Heat.
Brown was subsequently sent to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George, two first-round selections and two second-round picks, ending his decade-long tenure with the Celtics.
However, Scalabrine’s account directly contradicts previous reporting from ESPN’s Shams Charania, who stated at the time that Brown had never requested a trade and that Boston’s front office had independently decided to explore moving him.
Brown himself expressed disappointment with the way the organization handled his departure, particularly criticizing president of basketball operations Brad Stevens for what he considered a lack of transparency and respect.
The latest allegations also arrive amid renewed speculation surrounding Brown’s relationship with former teammate Jayson Tatum. After Tatum recently claimed he was surprised by the trade, Brown appeared to question his version of events on social media before joking that there wasn’t exactly any beef between them, but perhaps some “lamb chops and gravy.”
Importantly, Scalabrine subsequently softened his original remarks.
Speaking on NBC Sports Boston before Monday’s game against the Chicago Bulls, he acknowledged that Brown had not technically demanded a trade. Instead, Scalabrine maintained that the forward had presented the Celtics with certain demands, while admitting he did not know their precise nature.
He also suggested that a potential contract extension might have been among the issues involved, although he acknowledged that he had not established the full details.
Brown’s representatives have now firmly rejected the allegations.
According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, a representative for Brown categorically denied that the 2024 NBA Finals MVP had demanded a trade or presented Boston with a list of demands.
“10000% a lie,” Brown’s representative told ESPN.
The representative also specifically denied Scalabrine’s suggestion that Brown had requested a move to Milwaukee. According to Brown’s camp, the forward only asked to have input on his next destination after the Celtics’ attempted trade for Antetokounmpo fell through and Boston informed him that he would be moved regardless.
