Tim Hardaway Sr. Won’t Allow His Son To Wear His Retired No. 10 In Miami: “My Legacy Is My Legacy”

Tim Hardaway Jr. joining the Miami Heat comes with a perfect family storyline. It just will not come with his father’s number.

Hardaway Jr. has long worn No. 10, the same number his father made famous in Miami. But Tim Hardaway Sr. made it clear that sentiment has limits when the jersey is already hanging in the rafters.

“You love your kids unconditionally, you know. My legacy is my legacy. He’s doing it his way. Even though he likes to wear 10, he loves to wear 10, but that is not coming down from the rafters.”

“That is tough to do. Once it’s up there, you want it to stay up there. You don’t want nobody to touch it,” he continued. “I love him, you know. I love him to death. I’m the happiest for him. I’m living the life watching him play through college and in the NBA… So I’m happy that he’s doing it. But no, he can’t wear No. 10.”

That is about as loving and final as a father can be.

Hardaway Sr. earned that number in Miami. He helped define the franchise’s late-1990s identity with his killer-crossover, toughness and leadership, forming one of the Heat’s most memorable eras alongside Alonzo Mourning. The Heat retired his No. 10 because it represents his chapter, not just a digit on a jersey.

For Hardaway Jr., the story is still special. Wearing a Heat uniform already connects him to his father’s legacy. He does not need the exact number to honor it. In fact, creating his own lane may be the better tribute.

That is the funny beauty of the whole thing. Tim Hardaway Sr. is thrilled for his son, proud of his career and happy to watch him continue the family name in Miami.

But No. 10?

Dad has spoken.
