The NBA offseason apparently needed about five minutes after the Finals to become completely ridiculous again.
According to Bill Simmons, the Boston Celtics have made an offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Speaking on his podcast, Simmons said, “From what I heard, they made an offer in the past week,” while adding that he did not know the exact structure of the potential package. He also predicted that Boston could ultimately land the Milwaukee Bucks superstar.

For now, this remains reporting from Simmons, not an official trade agreement. Giannis is still a Milwaukee Buck. But the idea alone is enough to shake the league because the Celtics are not some desperate team throwing darts. They are a recent champion, a perennial contender, and one of the few franchises with enough ambition, assets and pressure to even enter a conversation this large.
The obvious question is the price. Any real Giannis package would be enormous. Simmons said he did not know who was included, but other reporting and discussion around Boston’s pursuit has centered on the idea that the Celtics would be aggressive while protecting Jayson Tatum. That means any serious offer would almost certainly force Boston to make painful decisions, because players like Giannis do not become available for spare parts and polite phone calls.
That is what makes this rumor so delicious. The Celtics already have championship expectations. Giannis already has a résumé that includes two MVPs, a Defensive Player of the Year award, a Finals MVP and a championship. Put those things together, and suddenly Boston is not just trying to reload. It is trying to turn the Eastern Conference into a locked door.
But there is also danger in the dream. Giannis is 31, expensive, physically demanding and not the kind of player you acquire without reshaping your entire basketball identity. If Boston goes all the way in, it is not just trading for talent. It is choosing a new timeline, a new hierarchy and a new version of itself.
Still, this is the Celtics. Subtlety has never won a press conference. After watching the Knicks win the title and the Spurs arrive ahead of schedule, Boston may feel the East moving under its feet. Standing still might be the riskiest option of all.
So now the league waits. Maybe it is smoke. Maybe it is leverage. Maybe it is the first real tremor before a blockbuster.
But if Bill Simmons is right, the Celtics have already picked up the phone. And when the name on the other end is Giannis Antetokounmpo, the entire NBA has to listen.
