Ja Morant Opens Up About Lack Of Joy And Strained Ties With Grizzlies

In a revealing postgame interview following the Memphis Grizzlies’ 114–106 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday night, Ja Morant offered a rare glimpse into his current mindset and it’s clear that all is not well between the star guard and his team.

When asked by reporters if he felt like he had regained the joy that once defined his electrifying playstyle, Morant responded bluntly:

“No.”

Pressed further on what it would take to get that joy back, he simply replied,

“We’ll see.”

The exchange was brief but heavy with implication, signaling that Morant’s discontent may run deeper than just on-court frustrations.

The comments came after Morant’s return from a one-game team-imposed suspension for conduct deemed detrimental to the team. That punishment followed his pointed criticism of the coaching staff after a loss to the Lakers last Friday. In his return against Detroit, Morant posted 18 points and 10 assists but shot just 5-of-16 from the field. The Grizzlies dropped to 3–5 on the season, continuing a rocky start amid injuries and internal tension.

Perhaps the most telling moment came when Morant was asked if he still has a good relationship with the Grizzlies organization. His response:

“Yeah… they told y’all that, right?”

The remark, laced with sarcasm, suggests a disconnect between the team’s public messaging and Morant’s personal experience. While the Grizzlies have maintained that they support their franchise cornerstone, Morant’s tone hinted at skepticism and unresolved issues behind the scenes.
