How the Rockets Could Still Land Giannis Antetokounmpo After Kevin Durant Blockbuster

On the last day of the 2024-25 NBA season, the Houston Rockets pulled off a jaw-dropping coup: acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. But according to FS1’s Nick Wright, the Rockets may be plotting an even bigger move—bringing Giannis Antetokounmpo to Houston and forming a superteam that could rival the greatest in league history.

The Rockets’ acquisition of Durant was bold but calculated. The team parted ways with Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round picks. Crucially, the organization held on to core assets—both young talent and a deep reservoir of first-round selections—keeping the door open for another marquee transaction.

Nick Wright presented a scenario on his show What’s Wright? that could turn fantasy into reality. If the Milwaukee Bucks begin to trend toward a rebuild or if Giannis signals a desire to move on, Houston could offer a king’s ransom:

  • Fred VanVleet
  • Reed Sheppard
  • Brooklyn’s 2027 first-round pick
  • Phoenix’s 2027 and 2029 first-round picks
  • Dallas’ 2029 first-round pick
  • Houston’s own 2030 first-round pick

That’s six premium picks and two impact players—arguably the strongest potential package in the market for a superstar.

This isn’t just wishful thinking. With Durant in tow, the Rockets have signaled a full-fledged commitment to contention. Adding Giannis would not only accelerate that mission but could position Houston as the epicenter of the NBA for the next half-decade.

Imagine a core led by Durant and Antetokounmpo, supported by Amen Thompson, Cam Whitmore, and other rising stars. Defensively formidable and offensively explosive, that team would demand championship expectations from day one.

The pivotal piece in this puzzle? Giannis himself. The Bucks still appear committed to winning, and Antetokounmpo has made no public statements about leaving. But NBA landscapes shift quickly, especially if Milwaukee falters early in the season or chooses to pivot toward a long-term rebuild.

Regardless of whether the Giannis trade materializes, Houston’s strategy deserves praise. General Manager Rafael Stone has assembled a flexible and talented roster, made savvy draft decisions, and retained enough capital to chase megastars without mortgaging the team’s future.

Should Giannis become available, the Rockets will be ready—and if they succeed, it could usher in a new dynasty deep in the heart of Texas.
