The Kevin Durant era in Phoenix is officially over. In a stunning move that reshapes the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets have acquired the two-time Finals MVP from the Phoenix Suns, according to multiple reports.
The Rockets are sending a package that includes Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round picks to Phoenix in exchange for Durant.
Durant, 36, now joins his fifth NBA team after previous stints with the Thunder, Warriors, Nets, and Suns. Despite averaging 26.6 points on 52.7% shooting last season and earning his 15th All-Star nod, Durant’s time in Phoenix was marred by injuries, roster instability, and postseason disappointment. The Suns missed the playoffs entirely in 2025, prompting a front-office overhaul and a pivot toward rebuilding.
Durant had reportedly listed Houston among his preferred destinations, along with Miami and San Antonio. With just one year left on his contract, his leverage helped steer the deal to a team where he’s expected to sign an extension.
For Houston, the trade signals a dramatic shift to full contending. After finishing second in the West last season, the Rockets are betting that Durant’s elite scoring and playoff experience can elevate them into true title contention.
While the Rockets gave up promising young talent in Green and Brooks, they retained key pieces like Alperen Şengün, Amen Thompson, Tari Eason, and Jabari Smith Jr., preserving a strong supporting cast around Durant.
The Suns, meanwhile, are embracing a full reset. By acquiring Green and the No. 10 pick, they add youth and flexibility to a roster that had grown top-heavy and stagnant. The trade also gives them a chance to recoup some of the draft capital they spent to acquire Durant in 2023.
