NBA’s Official Twitter Account Hacked, Promotes Bizarre Crypto Scheme

The NBA’s official Twitter account became the target of a hacking incident last night. The breach saw the account promoting a fake cryptocurrency called “$NBA Coin,” claiming it was a groundbreaking digital asset designed to “redefine fan engagement, transactions, and experiences within the basketball ecosystem.”

The hackers posted a series of tweets announcing the supposed partnership between the NBA and the Solana Network, a blockchain platform. The posts described the fake cryptocurrency as offering “lightning-fast transactions, unparalleled security, and seamless integration into the Web3 landscape.” While the tweets were quickly deleted, the damage had already been done, with fans taking to social media to express their confusion and amusement.

The NBA’s PR team confirmed the hacking incident, stating that the league had regained control of the account and was investigating the breach. “Official NBA accounts were hacked,” the league informed Front Office Sports. “Sorry, no NBA Coin on Solana coming.” The incident has raised questions about the security measures in place for high-profile social media accounts, especially those representing major organizations.

This isn’t the first time a sports league has fallen victim to a hacking incident. Earlier this year, the UFC’s official Instagram account was similarly compromised, with hackers promoting a fake crypto wallet address. These incidents highlight the growing need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect against such breaches.

Fans, meanwhile, couldn’t help but find humor in the situation. Memes and jokes flooded social media.
