Mitchell Robinson’s High School Coach Shares Moving Story Of How They Became Roommates

In the heart of Louisiana, the beginning of a heartwarming story unfolded between a young basketball prodigy named Mitchell Robinson and his high school coach, Butch Stockton.

Their relationship transcended the boundaries of the basketball court, evolving into a deep and abiding friendship that led to an unexpected living arrangement – becoming roommates years later.

Robinson, a towering 7-footer for the New York Knicks, first emerged as a star player at Eunice High School under Stockton’s guidance. Their connection extended beyond the game, with Stockton recognizing Robinson’s potential and providing him with unwavering support both on and off the court.

Their bond deepened during the most challenging time for Stockton. In September 2023, Stockton’s wife, Sandra, passed away after a long illness. Grief-stricken and facing the prospect of living alone, Stockton found solace in Robinson’s unwavering support.

Touched by Stockton’s loss, Robinson extended an invitation that would change their lives.

“Coach, there’s no reason you stay down here in Louisiana anymore,” Robinson said. “Come to New York with me and enjoy yourself and get your mind back straight because you know how much you loved your wife.”

Stockton was hesitant at first, but Robinson’s genuine care and concern convinced him to accept the offer. In October 2023, Stockton moved to New York City to live with Robinson.

Their living arrangement has also benefited Robinson, providing him with a sense of stability and comfort away from the pressures of the NBA.

“It’s been really good for me,” Robinson said. “He’s like a father figure to me. He’s always there for me, no matter what.”
