Gregg Popovich Reluctantly Compares Luka Doncic To Magic Johnson

Luka Doncic has made a big leap in his sophomore year. In just two seasons, he has accomplished winning Rookie of the Year and becoming an All-Star. He’s also leading his team to the playoffs (so far), despite the low expectations prior to the season. His numbers are also something that stack up along the guys on the top of the hierarchy.

Considering his accomplishments at an early age, it’s understandable that ‘Luka comparisons’ will only continue to flourish. Just last December, coach Gregg Popovich joined in on these discussions and compared Luka to Magic Johnson after Luka’s 24/10/8 outburst against his Spurs.

Per ESPN:

“I hate to say this: He’s not Magic Johnson, but it’s Magic Johnson-like in the sense that he sees the floor in that same way,” said Popovich, who watched Doncic record a 42-point triple-double the previous time the Spurs faced the Mavs. “He’s got a real intuitive sense, and you can’t teach that. He’s just got it and he’s great at it. I’m not trying to put the Magic Johnson pressure on him — he’s not ready for that yet — but he’s doing a hell of a job.”

Luka Doncic is averaging 28.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game on 46.1% shooting, in only his second year. Magic Johnson in his 2nd season, averaged 21.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game on 53.2% shooting. Both are around the same height, they can play different positions and have insane passing ability, so the comparison does make sense.

Luka will only draw more all-time great comparisons and the hype train won’t get any smaller, any time soon. It’s not too late to jump on the Luka wagon. A player of his caliber is a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
