Jalen Duren reportedly knows exactly what he wants from the Detroit Pistons: the full five-year maximum contract worth approximately $287 million.
Detroit, at least for now, does not appear ready to place that offer on the table. One league executive described the negotiations as a “staring contest,” with Duren and the Pistons seemingly prepared to wait for the other side to move first.
Duren has built a strong case for a massive payday. The 22-year-old emerged as a critical part of a Detroit team that won 60 games, earned the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference and greatly exceeded preseason expectations. His breakout season also produced his first All-Star appearance and an All-NBA Third Team selection, making him eligible for a contract starting at 30 percent of the salary cap.
That does not automatically mean the Pistons must pay every available dollar. Detroit must decide whether Duren’s rebounding, interior scoring and continued development justify a deal normally reserved for established franchise superstars. His limitations outside the paint and uneven postseason performance could give the front office reasons to push for a lower number.
Duren, meanwhile, has little reason to negotiate against himself. He bet on his development by not agreeing to an earlier extension, then responded with the best season of his career and unlocked a significantly larger maximum salary.
The Pistons want to keep one of the league’s most promising young centers. Duren wants to be compensated like one.
Now Detroit has a $287 million question – and neither side appears ready to blink.
