Charles Barkley believes LeBron James’ move to the Philadelphia 76ers strengthens the criticism that has followed him for much of his career: whenever possible, he surrounds himself with established stars.
“The number one knock on LeBron for older guys like me has always been, ‘Yo, man, you’re always stacking your team,’” Barkley said. “He stacked in Miami. He stacked in Cleveland. He stacked in L.A. Now he’s stacking it in Philly.”

James has joined a Philadelphia roster built to contend immediately, with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe among his new teammates. The 41-year-old reportedly accepted a significant pay cut to make the move, clearly prioritizing another championship opportunity as he enters his 24th NBA season.
From Barkley’s perspective, however, the destination matters less than the familiar pattern. James joined Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami, later returned to Cleveland alongside Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, and eventually teamed with Anthony Davis in Los Angeles. Barkley has repeatedly argued that those carefully constructed rosters should be considered when evaluating LeBron’s legacy.
“So that, to me, I’m going to still have the same criticism I’ve always had,” Barkley said.
There is an obvious counterargument. NBA championships are rarely won without multiple elite players, and James is hardly the first superstar to seek the best possible supporting cast. At this stage of his career, choosing an immediate contender instead of leading a rebuilding project is also entirely logical.
Still, Barkley is nothing if not consistent. LeBron changed teams again. Barkley simply brought the same criticism with him.
