As the fallout from the FBI’s sweeping sports betting investigation continues, the NBA has issued a firm statement distancing itself from Terry Rozier’s past absences while he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets. The league clarified that it played no role in Rozier’s game availability prior to his arrest in connection with illegal gambling activities.
In response to speculation that Rozier’s limited appearances during the 2022–23 season may have been influenced by league pressure or internal investigations, an NBA spokesperson stated:
“The NBA had no involvement in Terry Rozier’s playing time decisions while he was with the Charlotte Hornets. Those decisions were made solely by the team’s coaching and medical staff.”
The clarification comes after reports resurfaced suggesting Rozier may have intentionally sat out games to influence betting outcomes, a central allegation in the federal indictment.

Rozier’s absence from a March 2023 game against the Pelicans raised red flags among betting watchdogs. He played just 10 minutes before exiting with a minor foot injury, leading to unusual betting patterns on his under-performance. That game is now part of the FBI’s broader investigation into rigged bets and insider manipulation.
While the league has cooperated with federal authorities, it maintains that it did not suppress or manipulate Rozier’s playing time. Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the importance of transparency and integrity in a recent interview:
“There’s nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition. We are fully cooperating with the investigation and reviewing all relevant details.”
Rozier, now with the Miami Heat, has been placed on administrative leave pending further legal proceedings. His attorney has vowed to fight the charges, and the NBA continues to monitor the situation closely.
