Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has gone from undrafted rookie to one of the NBA’s most valuable wings, and his next contract could reflect just how far he’s come. According to multiple reports, rival executives believe Reaves could earn up to $40 million annually when he hits unrestricted free agency in 2026.
Reaves’ rise has been nothing short of remarkable. After signing with the Lakers in 2021 as an undrafted free agent, he quickly carved out a role with his versatility, shot-making, and poise in big moments. By the 2024–25 season, he had blossomed into a consistent 20-point scorer, averaging 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists across 73 games.
That production, alongside stars LeBron James and Luka Dončić, has made him one of the league’s most reliable complementary players, and a potential cornerstone for the Lakers or any team willing to pay top dollar.
This past summer, Reaves declined a four-year, $89.2 million extension from the Lakers, the maximum the team could offer under current rules. While that figure would be life-changing for most players, Reaves and his representatives believe his market value will soar in 2026, when he can sign a deal worth significantly more.
“Still to this day, I sit there and think about, relative to any life, that is a lot of money—a lot, a lot, a lot of money,” Reaves admitted when reflecting on the offer. “But we didn’t think that the number was the right number”.
Despite declining the extension, Reaves has expressed a strong desire to remain in Los Angeles long-term. He credited Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss for giving him his first opportunity and treating his family well.
“I want to be in L.A.,” Reaves said. “It’s not like we’re trying to just whack ’em over the head for more money than what I deserve. We just want to get what we feel like I’ve put the work in to get”.
League insiders expect Reaves to command at least $35 million annually, with some projecting offers north of $40 million. His ability to play on or off the ball, defend multiple positions, and thrive alongside superstars makes him one of the most attractive free agents in the upcoming class.
Reaves holds a $14.8 million player option for the 2026–27 season, which he is widely expected to decline. That decision would make him one of the headliners of a loaded free-agent market, where teams with cap space will line up to bid for his services.
For the Lakers, the challenge will be balancing their star-heavy payroll with the need to keep Reaves, who has become a fan favorite and a vital piece of their future.
