For nearly four decades, Ernie Johnson has been the steady voice behind one of the most beloved shows in basketball history. Now, Inside the NBA is preparing to say goodbye to the man who helped make it a cultural phenomenon, and Charles Barkley is having a difficult time imagining the show without him.
On Wednesday, October 28, Johnson announced that the 2026-27 NBA season will be his last as host of Inside the NBA, bringing an extraordinary 37-season run to an end.
The 70-year-old broadcasting legend explained that the decision was entirely his own. After decades of preparing for countless broadcasts, Johnson acknowledged that the demanding routine had gradually become more challenging than enjoyable.
It’s time.

Recent health concerns, including heart problems and bypass surgery, also influenced his decision. Johnson said he wants to slow down and spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
But it was the reaction of his longtime colleagues that truly demonstrated the significance of the announcement.
During Wednesday night’s broadcast on ESPN, Barkley struggled to contain his emotions as he addressed the man he has worked alongside since joining the show in 2000.
“It’s been an honor and a privilege to work with you all this time,” Barkley said, visibly fighting back tears.

The Hall of Famer reflected on their extraordinary journey together, thanking Johnson not only for his professionalism but also for the leadership, friendship and kindness he has shown throughout their years on television.
For Barkley, Johnson has always been much more than a colleague. He has been the person holding together four completely different personalities, allowing their spontaneous arguments, outrageous jokes and genuine affection to turn a basketball studio program into must-watch entertainment.
Barkley also emphasized that Johnson’s character away from the cameras is even more impressive than the warmth viewers have witnessed on television.
Johnson was visibly moved by the tribute, while Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal joined in honoring their longtime friend.
Before the season, Barkley had indicated that he and Johnson considered themselves a package deal, suggesting that he, too, could step away once Johnson decided to leave. However, Barkley has not formally confirmed his own departure following Wednesday’s announcement.
For Johnson, the decision does not mean completely retiring from television. He intends to continue working on NCAA March Madness coverage and selected TNT and CBS projects while developing his new production company, 32 Bowties.
Nevertheless, his departure will mark the end of an era.
From the unforgettable exchanges between Barkley and O’Neal to the countless hilarious moments involving Smith, Johnson has been the indispensable moderator of a show that succeeded precisely because it never felt like ordinary sports television.
Inside the NBA survived the transition from TNT to ESPN. It survived changes in the league, broadcasting and television itself. But replacing Ernie Johnson will be an entirely different challenge.
Because while the show’s stars have provided the entertainment, Johnson has always been its heart. And when he leaves the desk for the final time, Inside the NBA will never quite be the same.
