The wait is finally over, and AJ Dybantsa wasted absolutely no time showing why the Washington Wizards made him the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

After missing Washington’s first four games of the season with a sprained left ankle, the highly anticipated rookie made his NBA debut Wednesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, delivering an impressive individual performance despite his team’s 121-111 defeat.

The 19-year-old forward finished with a team-high 19 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting, adding two rebounds and two assists in just 27 minutes of action.

But it was the way Dybantsa introduced himself to the league that immediately caught everyone’s attention.

Just 16 seconds into his NBA career, the former BYU standout attacked Cleveland’s defense, blew past James Harden and drove aggressively toward the basket before drawing a foul on Jarrett Allen. He converted both free throws, officially opening his NBA scoring account.

Moments later, Dybantsa delivered his first field goal in spectacular fashion, finishing an alley-oop dunk off a perfectly timed pass from Trae Young.

By the end of the opening quarter, the rookie had already scored nine points without missing a shot, displaying the athleticism, confidence and offensive versatility that made him one of the most highly regarded prospects in recent years.

Dybantsa scored from multiple areas of the floor, attacked the basket without hesitation and demonstrated an encouraging ability to create his own opportunities against established NBA defenders.

His 19 points were the most by a Wizards rookie in his debut since Tom Gugliotta scored 20 against the Charlotte Hornets in November 1992. The performance also tied for the fourth-highest scoring debut by a rookie in franchise history.

Washington head coach Brian Keefe was impressed with what he saw.

“I thought he was terrific,” Keefe said, praising the rookie’s offensive instincts, passing and defensive activity.

Despite the individual success, the Wizards couldn’t turn Dybantsa’s debut into a victory.

Washington led 69-59 at halftime and extended its advantage to 13 points during the third quarter, but Cleveland gradually fought its way back into the contest.

Dybantsa briefly restored Washington’s lead at 105-104 in the fourth quarter before the Cavaliers responded with nine unanswered points to take control.

Evan Mobley led Cleveland with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Peyton Watson contributed 22 points. Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr scored 18 points apiece for Washington, with Trae Young adding 14 points and eight assists.

After the game, Dybantsa acknowledged that he had been determined to make an immediate impact rather than allow the occasion to overwhelm him.

“I was just trying to be aggressive from the jump,” the rookie explained.

That mentality has been a defining characteristic of his rapid rise. Following a sensational freshman season at BYU, where he averaged a nation-leading 25.5 points per game, Dybantsa entered the NBA carrying enormous expectations. His combination of size, explosiveness and scoring ability has made him one of the most intriguing young players in basketball.

Of course, one game is far too small a sample to predict how his career will unfold, and the Wizards will continue monitoring his workload as he returns from injury.

But his debut offered more than just a promising statistical performance. Dybantsa looked comfortable, aggressive and remarkably composed against NBA competition.
