Isaiah Hartenstein Signals Strong Interest In Joining Germany This Summer (And Beyond)

Isaiah Hartenstein may finally be ready to become more than a long-discussed possibility for Germany. During an international media call before the start of the NBA playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder big man said the chances of him joining the national team are “high,” adding that he has already spoken with Germany’s head coach and expects to be involved if the next qualifier falls in August.

“I already talked to the German national team coach. I’ll be out there at the qualifier if it’s in August, I think. Even if it’s playing or just being around, I think it’s really important to, now in my situation, to just be around the team more and get more of the chemistry. “

Hartenstein has not appeared for Germany’s senior national team since 2018, but he has publicly said in the past that he wants to return.

That matters for both sides. Germany remains one of the strongest programs in international basketball after its recent rise. Hartenstein, meanwhile, is no longer a fringe NBA talent trying to find a foothold. He is an established big on a Thunder team that, as defending champion, enters the postseason with championship ambitions, and that distinction sits at the heart of his explanation. He said earlier obstacles included injuries and teams being unwilling to let him play when he was younger, but stressed that it was always important to establish himself first in the NBA and put himself and his family in a secure position.

“There was some stuff before with injuries or teams not kind of letting me play when I was younger, like in my career. And for me always, it was always really important to establish myself in the NBA. And that was always my dream growing up and just also to provide for my family and be in a certain situation where I’m established. And so, now it’s just a perfect time.”

Hartenstein did not describe national-team hesitation as indifference. He framed it as sequencing. First came survival, then stability, then stature. Only now, after years of carving out a real NBA career, does the national-team question seem to arrive without compromise attached to it. In that sense, his answer sounded less like a vague intention than like the closing of a long delay.

For Germany, the appeal is obvious. Hartenstein brings defense, size, touch, rebounding and connective passing, and his presence would deepen a frontcourt conversation that has increasingly turned toward the future. For Hartenstein, the attraction appears just as strong. He spoke not only about playing, but about “just being around” the group, building chemistry and becoming part of the team environment more consistently. That is the language of someone thinking beyond a cameo.

Nothing is official yet, and summer availability in international basketball is always vulnerable to timing, health and team circumstances. But the significance of Hartenstein’s answer lies in how little ambiguity he left behind. For years, his Germany future felt theoretical. Now, for the first time in a long time, it sounds close enough to imagine.
