Warriors Eye Elite Perimeter Defenders In Offseason Overhaul: Herb Jones, Nickeil Alexander-Walker On Radar

With the 2025 NBA offseason heating up, the Golden State Warriors are wasting no time reshaping their roster. Following a second-round playoff exit, the front office is reportedly focused on bolstering its perimeter defense—and two names have emerged as top targets: Herb Jones and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

NBA insider Brett Siegel sparked buzz with a post on X, revealing that Golden State has recently discussed both Jones and Alexander-Walker as potential additions.

“Have heard Herb Jones and Nickeil Alexander-Walker talk for Golden State within last couple of days. Warriors certainly looking for upgrades in free agency this week and potentially on trade market, if the price is right,” Siegel wrote.

The Warriors’ interest aligns with a broader strategy to reinforce their defense around Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler, especially with Gary Payton II’s future in doubt.

A 2024 First Team All-Defensive selection, Jones is known for his elite on-ball defense and disruptive instincts. Though limited to just 20 games last season, he averaged 10.3 points and 1.9 steals per game. His fit alongside Draymond Green could form a defensive tandem capable of locking down elite wings.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker on the other hand is coming off a strong season with the Timberwolves. The 6’5” guard played all 82 games and averaged 9.4 points on 38.1% shooting from three. Viewed by some execs as a “Derrick White–type” contributor, he offers plug-and-play defense and low-maintenance offense—ideal for Golden State’s system.

The Warriors already made a splash by acquiring Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline, but they’re not done. With limited cap flexibility, Golden State is targeting players who can contribute immediately without commanding max-level contracts. Both Jones and Alexander-Walker fit that mold.

Meanwhile, the potential departure of Payton II and the aging core of Curry, Green, and Butler make this offseason a pivotal moment for the franchise’s short-term title hopes.
