Victor Wembanyama Opens Up About Gaining 30 Pounds In Two Years: “It Had To Be Done Carefully”

Victor Wembanyama has always been a unicorn—7-foot-3 with guard-like skills and a wingspan that seems to stretch across continents. But one of the biggest concerns when he entered the NBA in 2023 was his slender frame. Now, two years later, the San Antonio Spurs star has revealed just how much work went into transforming his body—and why it had to be done with surgical precision.

In a recent appearance on Cold as Balls with Kevin Hart, Wembanyama shared that he’s gained 30 pounds since entering the league, going from around 215–220 pounds to 245.

“Strength training, of course, but the main thing for me is I could, in theory, put on a lot of weight, but I would lose some of my mobility,” Wembanyama explained. “Some of my athleticism. So, it’s something that needs to be done really carefully.”

Wembanyama’s team has been meticulous about his physical development. Rather than simply bulking up, the focus has been on core strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. The goal? Add muscle without sacrificing the fluidity and explosiveness that make him such a matchup nightmare.

His agent, Bouna Ndiaye, has echoed that sentiment in the past, saying they’ve actively resisted pressure to “bulk up” in a traditional sense. Instead, they’ve prioritized durability and longevity, modeling Wembanyama’s path after legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The transformation is already paying dividends. In his second season, Wembanyama averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks per game before being sidelined with a shoulder issue unrelated to his frame. He’s shown he can withstand the physicality of the NBA while still moving like a guard.

“We have a lot of eyes and a lot of minds thinking about me in this instance,” Wembanyama said, acknowledging the collaborative effort behind his evolution.
