On May 14, 1996, basketball fans witnessed the end of an era as Earvin “Magic” Johnson officially announced his retirement from the NBA—for the second time. After a brief comeback with the Los Angeles Lakers, Magic decided to step away from the game for good, concluding one of the most iconic careers in basketball history.

Magic Johnson’s return to the NBA in 1996 was unexpected but welcomed. After retiring in 1991 due to his HIV diagnosis, Johnson spent several years as an ambassador for the league, a coach, and an advocate for HIV awareness. But his love for the game never faded.

In January 1996, at age 36, Magic returned to the Lakers, proving he still had plenty of skill left in his legendary hands.

During his 32 regular-season games, Magic played as a power forward, adapting to a new role and averaging 14.6 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. His court vision was still elite, his charisma as electrifying as ever, and his presence lifted Los Angeles during a transitional phase.

However, the Lakers fell in the first round of the playoffs, losing to the Houston Rockets in four games. After the series, Magic realized his body was no longer suited for the grueling demands of the league, leading to his decision to step away permanently.

Magic’s second retirement carried a different tone than his first. In 1991, his sudden departure from the game was heartbreaking. But in 1996, he had the opportunity to leave on his own terms, having given fans one last glimpse of his brilliance.

“It was fun coming back,” Johnson said at his retirement press conference. “But I knew it was time. The game has changed, the players have changed. It’s their time now.”

Johnson left the NBA as one of its most decorated players, boasting five championships, three MVPs, and 12 All-Star appearances. His impact stretched beyond statistics—he revolutionized the point guard position and made the Lakers one of the most entertaining teams in history with his dazzling passes and leadership.

Even after retiring, Magic remained deeply connected to basketball and the Lakers organization. He became a successful entrepreneur, team executive, and outspoken advocate for HIV awareness and social change. His influence on the NBA continued, helping build championship-winning rosters and mentoring future stars.
