Especially considering that referees, who arguably were involved in one of the league’s biggest scandals, are still officiating games today – Scott Foster was found to have received 134 phone calls from Tim Donaghy between October 2006 and April 2007, the period during which Donaghy admitted to betting on NBA games.
These calls were often made immediately before and after games that Donaghy was officiating. On one particular day, records show multiple calls between Foster and Donaghy, including calls before and after games they both refereed.
Despite the high volume of calls, Foster was never found to have been involved in the betting scandal. He maintained that the calls were merely friendly conversations and that betting was never discussed. Foster explained that it was not unusual for officials to be in frequent contact, discussing various topics related to their profession.
The connection between Foster and Donaghy raised suspicions due to the timing and frequency of their communications. However, investigations did not find evidence implicating Foster in the scandal, and he continued his career as an NBA referee.
