Charles Barkley Rips Claim That Tyler Herro Is On The Same Level As Luka Doncic, Trae Young

There is not much of an argument to be made for putting Tyler Herro in the same conversation as young stars like Luka Doncic, Trae Young and Ja Morant. But according to the Miami Heat shooting guard himself, he feels like he has put the work in to be considered as a part of that talented group.

This season, Herro is looking like he’s on the brink of a breakout, while establishing himself as a very early frontrunner for the Sixth Man of the Year. Through seven games, the 21-year old shooting guard is averaging 22.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game on 47.2% shooting from the field.

His numbers are not that far off from Doncic and Young, so this has made an impression on the media and some fans that Herro may be right and is making a solid case as a player who belongs in the same bracket as those aforementioned young stars.

However, many observers including NBA Hall of Famer and TNT host Charles Barkley are not completely sold with the talks and comparisons. While Barkley recognizes that Herro is putting up similar numbers, he argues that it doesn’t warrant a comparison to the likes of Doncic and Young, noting the difference in role and responsibility.

“I’m a big Tyler Herro fan, but just because they got the same numbers, those guys have to carry a team every night, and first of all, second issue is he’s playing against backups,” Barkley argued. “When you’re coming off the bench, you’re playing against backups. So, no disrespect, Herro’s a nice little player, but when you are the man, first and foremost, and also, the pressure with going to be the man is not telling anybody, ‘Hey, Tyler, come off the bench, shoot it anytime you want to. You’re playing against scrubs on the second unit.’”
