Stephen Curry may be preparing to use the strongest piece of leverage he has left with the Golden State Warriors: his next contract.
According to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, the longer Curry waits to sign an extension, the more his potential 2027 free agency could pressure Golden State’s front office to keep pursuing meaningful roster upgrades. Curry wants the Warriors to assemble the best possible team around him and provide him with a legitimate opportunity to make another deep playoff run.
However, the situation should not be presented as Curry issuing an ultimatum or directly threatening to leave. Curry remains under contract for the 2026-27 season, during which he is scheduled to earn approximately $62.6 million. He is expected to become eligible for another extension in late August, giving him the option of committing to Golden State beyond next season or preserving the possibility of entering free agency.
That decision gives Curry considerable influence. Signing immediately would provide the Warriors with long-term security, while delaying an agreement would leave the organization facing uncomfortable questions about the future of the most important player in franchise history.
Curry has publicly expressed hope that Golden State will continue exploring creative ways to improve the roster. At the same time, injuries and limited flexibility have complicated the Warriors’ attempts to construct another championship-caliber team around their aging core.
For Curry, the message appears straightforward: loyalty to the Warriors does not mean accepting a ceremonial final chapter. He still wants to compete at the highest level, and his contract negotiations could become the clearest way to remind the front office that the remaining years of his career cannot be treated like an extended farewell tour.
