Derrick White For Rudy Gobert? The Celtics-Wolves Rumor Has A Real Framework

The NBA offseason has officially reached the part where one rumor can make two fan bases stare at their phones in disbelief.

According to reporting from Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Minnesota Timberwolves have strong interest in Celtics guard Derrick White. Jake Fischer later added that if Minnesota and Boston ever wanted to build something bigger, a White-for-Rudy Gobert framework would represent a clean salary match. Fischer also reported that Boston has inquired about Gobert before, most recently around February’s trade deadline.

Fischer specifically framed the Wolves as exploratory and open-minded rather than desperate to move their four-time Defensive Player of the Year. The rumor however, has oxygen: White is exactly the kind of guard Minnesota could use next to Anthony Edwards, and Gobert is exactly the kind of defensive anchor Boston has at least thought about before.

For Minnesota, the appeal of White is easy to understand. He defends, makes quick decisions, spaces the floor, can handle the ball without hijacking the offense, and does not need to be treated like a star to play like a winning player. Put that next to Edwards, and suddenly the Wolves have another connector who can close games, guard elite perimeter players and make life easier in the half court.

For Boston, Gobert would be a very different kind of swing. The Celtics have built much of their identity around spacing, versatility and guards who punish mistakes. Trading White would hurt. He has become one of the league’s best role-star hybrids, the kind of player every contender wants because he fits everywhere. Gobert, meanwhile, would push Boston toward size, rim protection and a more traditional defensive backbone.

That is why this is fascinating. It is not just a salary match. It is a philosophical trade. White would make Minnesota cleaner, faster and more flexible around Edwards. Gobert would make Boston bigger, more physical and more dependent on a defensive structure built around the paint.
