Victor Wembanyama And Julian Champagnie Bring Spurs Spirit To Children’s Hospital

Victor Wembanyama’s season ended with pain. A Finals loss, missed chances, and frustration that sticks to a franchise all summer.

However, instead of heading to a well-deserved vacation right away, he showed up where basketball disappointment suddenly feels very small.

Wembanyama and Spurs teammate Julian Champagnie made a surprise visit to children at a San Antonio hospital, spending time with young patients after the Spurs’ NBA Finals defeat to the New York Knicks. It was a simple gesture, but a meaningful one: handshakes, smiles, conversations, photos, and a few moments where the tallest man in the room helped make a hospital room feel a little lighter.

That is the part of sports people sometimes forget. Players lose games. They miss shots. They get criticized, memed, blamed and debated. But away from the scoreboard, they still have the ability to walk into a room and completely change somebody’s day.

For Wembanyama, the visit came at a telling time. The Spurs had just watched their championship hopes disappear, but instead of vanishing into the offseason, he and Champagnie spent time with kids who were dealing with something much bigger than a blown lead or a lost series.

Champagnie deserves credit, too. He has been active in the San Antonio community before. San Antonio loves its basketball team differently, and moments like this are a big reason why.
