Joe Mazzulla Wants a Wolf For Home Security And Somehow It Sounds Exactly Like Him

Joe Mazzulla has become the NBA’s most quotable head coach not because he tries to be funny, but because he seems wired differently than the rest of the profession.

The Celtics coach has spent the last few years dropping lines about “psychological warfare,” leaning on animal-kingdom metaphors, and building an entire public persona around intensity, paranoia-as-preparedness, and the kind of oddball honesty that makes every weekly radio hit feel like it could veer off the rails.

Friday’s installment on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak & Bertrand stayed right on brand. Mazzulla, discussing life away from the court, revealed he’s been trying to upgrade his home security plan beyond the family dog.

“We obviously have a dog,” he said, “but I’m trying to convince (my wife) to get a wolf that just kind of roams the area of our house, as kind of an extra layer of protection.”

It’s the sort of sentence that instantly goes viral because it’s absurd in practice and perfectly consistent in character. This is the same coach who has talked openly about always staying aware of exits and not liking situations where he feels boxed in; habits that fit his broader coaching identity: control the environment, anticipate stress, embrace discomfort before it embraces you.

A wolf roaming the perimeter isn’t just a punchline; it’s Mazzulla’s worldview translated into an animal.

Of course, the real world is less romantic. Massachusetts is clear that it has strict rules on keeping wild animals as pets, and state law places significant restrictions on wild canid hybrids.

That doesn’t mean Mazzulla is filing paperwork for a timber wolf; it more likely means he’s doing what he always does… speaking in extremes to make a point about protection, vigilance, and the comfort he finds in taking responsibility for every variable he can control.

For Boston, Mazzulla’s uniqueness has always been a feature, not a side show: his players often describe him as intense, unconventional, and relentlessly focused on habits. For everyone else, he’s become the rare coach whose press conferences can compete with the games for entertainment value.
