NBA legend Allen Iverson has revealed that he has been sober for six months, calling the decision to stop drinking one of the most important choices he has ever made.

The Hall of Famer shared the news during a recent interview on CBS Mornings while promoting his new memoir, Misunderstood.

Iverson, 50, admitted that alcohol had been a struggle for him in the years following his retirement. But he now says the clarity and peace he has found in sobriety have been life-changing.

“One of the best decisions I ever made in my life was to stop drinking,” Iverson said. “It’s been six months now. I feel better than I did when I was doing it. When you get drunk, you’re not how you usually are.”

He added that the positive reactions from those closest to him have reinforced his commitment:

“The more I see how the people around me appreciate it, I love it.”

Iverson’s career was defined by brilliance on the court and controversy off it. Drafted No. 1 overall in 1996, he became an 11-time All-Star, 2001 MVP, and one of the most influential cultural figures in NBA history. His fearless play, signature crossover, and unapologetic individuality reshaped the league’s image.

But Iverson also faced criticism and personal struggles, including reports of financial and lifestyle challenges after his playing days.

Iverson’s memoir, Misunderstood, dives into his life story, from his upbringing in Hampton, Virginia, to his rise as a global icon. The title reflects his frustration with being judged by appearances and stereotypes throughout his career.

“With this book, you’re hearing it from the horse’s mouth,” Iverson explained. “Misunderstood comes from, you think you know but you have no idea.”

Alongside his memoir, Iverson is also the subject of an upcoming documentary, Allen Iv3rson, set to premiere later this month. Both projects give fans a chance to see the man behind the legend, not just the highlights, but the struggles and triumphs that shaped him.
