Philadelphia 76ers Reshape Roster To Retain Rising Star Quentin Grimes

As training camp looms, the Philadelphia 76ers are making bold moves to secure the future of one of their breakout stars: Quentin Grimes. According to multiple reports, the Sixers are actively shopping veterans Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre Jr. in an effort to clear cap space and offer Grimes a more competitive contract.

The Sixers currently sit just under the NBA’s first luxury tax apron, with roughly $11 million in breathing room. But retaining Grimes, who dazzled in his short stint with the team last season, will likely require more financial flexibility. Grimes, a restricted free agent, is reportedly seeking a deal that reflects his elevated role and production.

After arriving via trade from Dallas in February, Grimes averaged an impressive 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over 28 games. His shooting efficiency and defensive tenacity quickly made him a fan favorite and a key piece in the Sixers’ rebuilding puzzle.

To make room for Grimes, the Sixers are exploring trades involving Drummond and Oubre Jr., whose combined salaries total $13.4 million. While both players have contributed solid minutes, Drummond as a rebounding anchor and Oubre as a versatile wing, the team appears ready to prioritize youth and upside.

NBA insider Jake Fischer noted that Philadelphia is “looking to potentially move one of, if not both” players before camp begins. The move isn’t just about finances, it’s about reshaping the roster to align with a new competitive timeline.

Letting go of experienced contributors like Drummond and Oubre could leave the Sixers thin in depth, but it also opens the door for younger talent like Adem Bona, Jabari Walker, and Dominick Barlow to step into larger roles. The team’s front office seems committed to building around a core of Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and now, potentially, Quentin Grimes.

The Sixers’ offseason has been relatively quiet, but this cap-clearing effort signals a shift toward aggressive roster management. If they can successfully retain Grimes and develop their younger players, Philadelphia could re-emerge as a dark horse in the Eastern Conference.
