For nearly four decades, NBA on TNT has been a staple of basketball coverage, delivering unforgettable moments, insightful analysis, and unmatched chemistry between its hosts. But on May 31, 2025, the iconic show aired its final broadcast, marking the end of an era. At the heart of the farewell was Ernie Johnson, the beloved host who has been the steady presence of Inside the NBA since 1989.
As the final episode wrapped up, Johnson struggled to hold back tears while delivering his last sign-off.
“Thanks for watching us. It’s the NBA on TNT,” he said,
before placing his microphone on the desk and walking away from the set for the last time.

The conclusion of Inside the NBA on TNT comes as the league transitions to a new 11-year media rights deal worth at least $76 billion. Starting next season, NBA games will no longer air on TNT, with coverage shifting to ABC, ESPN, NBC, and Amazon Prime Video. While Inside the NBA will continue on ESPN and ABC, the TNT branding that made the show legendary will be gone.
Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle, whose team had just clinched a spot in the NBA Finals, took a moment during the trophy ceremony to acknowledge TNT’s legacy.
“Congratulations to TNT on a fabulous, unbelievable run that’s coming to an end. We’re all very sad about that,” he said.
Since its inception in 1988, NBA on TNT has been home to some of the most memorable moments in basketball history. From Shaq and Barkley’s hilarious banter to Craig Sager’s legendary sideline interviews, the show has left an indelible mark on the sport.
While the transition to ESPN and ABC ensures that Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal, and Smith will remain together, the TNT era will always be remembered as one of the greatest in sports broadcasting. As Johnson said in his farewell,
“Gratitude is the operative word for me. I’m grateful for all of the relationships we’ve built professionally and personally through the years”.
Though the name may change, the spirit of Inside the NBA will live on. But for fans who grew up watching the show on TNT, this farewell marks the end of something truly special.
