Some moments in NBA history live forever because of a championship, a game-winner or an iconic performance. Kawhi Leonard’s laugh has somehow managed to join that category for an entirely different reason.
Toronto Raptors players were recently challenged to recreate Leonard’s now-famous laugh, bringing back one of the most recognizable viral moments from his first stint with the franchise. The results ranged from surprisingly accurate to completely off the rails, with several players leaning fully into the bit.

The original moment dates back to Raptors Media Day in September 2018. Leonard had just arrived in Toronto after being traded from San Antonio and was asked to describe himself to a new fan base that still knew relatively little about his personality. After calling himself a “fun guy,” he produced an unusual, instantly memorable laugh that quickly spread across social media and became one of the defining memes of that NBA season.

Eight years later, the laugh remains closely associated with Leonard’s Toronto chapter. Even the NBA recently revisited the moment, with Leonard reflecting on the viral clip during 2026 Raptors Media Day.
In the new recreation video, current Raptors players take turns trying to imitate the sound and delivery. Jamal Shead and RJ Barrett drew particular attention online for getting remarkably close, while Scottie Barnes offered his own variation. Kyle Anderson, who previously played alongside Leonard in San Antonio, summed up the challenge well, joking that Leonard gives you something that sounds like a laugh without really laughing at all.
The exercise is obviously lighthearted, but it also shows how deeply Leonard’s brief Toronto run remains embedded in franchise culture.
His 2018-19 season with the Raptors ended with the organization’s first NBA championship, while the strange laugh that introduced Toronto to his personality became an unlikely cultural companion to that title run. Leonard even recreated it himself during the team’s 2019 championship parade, completing the transformation from awkward Media Day moment into a full-blown Raptors inside joke.
