Brandon Clarke’s Estate Expected To Receive Full $12.5 Million After Contract Details Are Corrected

A major clarification has emerged regarding the final year of Brandon Clarke’s contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Despite an earlier report stating that Clarke’s estate would not receive the remaining $12.5 million on his deal following his death in May, NBA sources now say the opposite is true: Clarke’s contract was fully protected in the event of death, with the money expected to be paid through a life insurance policy.

According to NBA reporter Kevin O’Connor, Clarke’s deal was specifically structured so that the Grizzlies would reimburse the cost of life insurance designed to protect the remaining value of his contract. That arrangement means the final $12.5 million is expected to reach Clarke’s estate even though it will not be paid as ordinary salary by Memphis.

That distinction corrects the central claim of the previous report, which had suggested Clarke’s final contract year was unprotected and therefore effectively lost after his death.

Instead, the contract reportedly contained one of the strongest forms of death protection available to an NBA player.

O’Connor reported that using life insurance in this manner is a customary approach around the league and can also offer tax advantages compared with simply guaranteeing salary payments after a player’s death. In Clarke’s case, the Grizzlies reimbursed the insurance costs while the policy provided financial protection for the remaining contract value.

Clarke had one season remaining on his deal and was scheduled to make $12.5 million in 2026-27. The 29-year-old had spent his entire seven-year NBA career with Memphis after entering the league in 2019. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds over his career and had become one of the longest-tenured members of the organization.

For salary-cap purposes, Clarke’s contract can still be removed from Memphis’ books. But that accounting treatment is separate from the financial protection negotiated for Clarke and his family.

The Grizzlies are not expected to carry Clarke’s $12.5 million as normal 2026-27 salary, yet his estate is still expected to receive the full amount through the life insurance arrangement.
