According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, negotiations have reached the “one-yard line,” although the agreement has not yet been completed. The proposed project would give cameras behind-the-scenes access to James during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers, whom he joined earlier this month.
The series is expected to follow James as he enters his 24th NBA season at age 41 and attempts to win a fifth championship. Philadelphia is widely expected to be the final stop of his career, but James has not formally announced when he intends to retire. His two-year contract reportedly includes a player option, meaning the precise length of his stay remains uncertain.
The documentary has been compared to ESPN’s acclaimed Michael Jordan series, The Last Dance, but it would not simply cover James’ upcoming season. The project is also expected to incorporate previously unseen footage collected throughout his career, potentially allowing the filmmakers to connect his final years with his rise from teenage phenomenon to the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
