Sam Presti did not disguise the reasoning behind Oklahoma City’s decision to trade Lu Dort.
“This was a financial decision,” the Thunder general manager said, offering a blunt explanation for why the franchise moved one of its longest-tenured and most important defensive players.
Dort was sent to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team trade involving the Dallas Mavericks. Oklahoma City received three future second-round picks while creating additional financial flexibility and moving below the NBA’s restrictive second apron.
Presti said he had been assured that the money saved through this summer’s moves, along with the franchise’s previous years outside the luxury tax, would eventually be reinvested into future Thunder teams.
“The impression I have been given is that the savings generated this summer, and from being out of the tax the last several years, will be re-allocated to future teams,” Presti said.
That explanation will not make Dort’s departure any easier for Thunder supporters. The undrafted guard developed into an elite perimeter defender after joining Oklahoma City in 2019 and became a major part of the team’s rise from rebuilding project to championship contender.
But the NBA’s new financial system forces even successful teams to make uncomfortable choices. Oklahoma City is preparing for increasingly expensive contracts across its young core, and remaining above the second apron would have limited the franchise’s flexibility in trades, roster construction and future spending.
Presti’s message was essentially that the Thunder are not refusing to spend. They are choosing when to spend. It is a logical long-term strategy, even if it produced a painful short-term goodbye.
Dort helped Oklahoma City build a contender. The Thunder are now betting that moving him will help them afford one for years to come.
