The Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren remain at the negotiating table, but meaningful progress has reportedly been modest.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Detroit continues to reject potential sign-and-trade scenarios and has consistently identified re-signing Duren as its top offseason priority. That stance suggests the Pistons still view the young center as a central piece alongside Cade Cunningham, even if both sides have yet to find common ground on the price of his next contract.
Duren entered restricted free agency after completing his rookie deal, giving Detroit significant control over the process because it can match an outside offer sheet. Reports earlier in the offseason indicated that his camp was underwhelmed by the team’s initial proposal and planned to explore sign-and-trade possibilities. Detroit, however, has shown little interest in helping facilitate an exit.
That leaves both sides in an uncomfortable but familiar NBA standoff. Duren wants to be paid according to his production and long-term upside, while the Pistons want to preserve flexibility and avoid bidding against themselves.
The negotiations may be moving slowly, but Detroit’s message has not changed: it wants Duren back. Now the Pistons simply have to prove it with an offer he is willing to sign.
