The Boston Celtics found a perfect way to introduce their rookies to life under Joe Mazzulla: make them determine whether a collection of intense quotes came from their head coach or an ancient philosopher.
In a hilarious team video, the newcomers were presented with statements about adversity, discipline and mental strength before being asked to identify their source. The challenge proved surprisingly difficult – which may be the greatest compliment possible to Mazzulla’s unique worldview.

That is what made the concept work so well. Mazzulla has developed a reputation for turning routine basketball questions into discussions about combat, discomfort, mortality and competitive survival. His answers can sound equally appropriate inside an NBA film room, a Roman battlefield or a philosophy textbook.
Playing for Mazzulla means embracing pressure, remaining comfortable in difficult situations and occasionally wondering whether the coach’s latest message was inspired by basketball or Marcus Aurelius.
Most NBA rookies must learn a new playbook. Boston’s rookies apparently need to study the Stoics, too.
