Dwyane Wade’s Son Zaire Officially Charged With Felony After Domestic-Violence Arrest

Zaire Wade, the 24-year-old son of Basketball Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade, has formally been charged with a felony following his arrest in connection with an alleged domestic-violence incident in Southern California.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a criminal complaint on July 9 charging Wade with inflicting corporal injury on a person with whom he was in a romantic relationship. Prosecutors allege that he willfully caused an injury resulting in a “traumatic condition.” Wade has not been convicted, and the allegation remains to be tested in court. His arraignment is scheduled for July 16 in Pasadena.

The charge stems from an incident on June 21 in Burbank. Police responded at approximately 5:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a woman screaming inside a residence. Authorities said the woman had visible lacerations on her face and body, although she was not transported to a hospital. Wade was arrested that day on suspicion of domestic violence, criminal threats and false imprisonment before being released after posting a $50,000 bond. An emergency protective order was also issued.

Although Wade was initially booked on suspicion of several offenses, the publicly reported complaint currently identifies one felony count. Under California Penal Code Section 273.5, a felony conviction can carry a state-prison sentence of two, three or four years, along with possible fines and probation. The filing of a charge, however, is not proof of guilt, and any potential punishment would depend on the outcome of the case and the court’s eventual findings.

The case represents a serious turn for Wade, who has pursued his own professional basketball career outside his father’s enormous shadow. After playing in the NBA G League, he most recently appeared for the Cape Town Tigers in the Basketball Africa League. Dwyane Wade and other family representatives had not publicly commented on the felony charge at the time of the initial reports.
