Jalen Brunson has never been the loudest kind of leader. He does not need the dramatic speech, the staged stare, or the performative chest-pounding. His leadership has always felt more practical than theatrical: make the right play, own the moment, steady the room, and let everyone else breathe a little easier because he is there.
So when Brunson was asked what the word “leadership” means to him, his answer sounded exactly like the player the Knicks have followed all season.
“It means a lot,” Brunson said. “My parents raised me to never be a follower, always be a leader. I feel like it’s something that’s helped me grow as a person, and it’s a role I enjoy having.”
That is the Brunson formula in one answer. Leadership, to him, is not a title handed out because he is the best scorer or the face of the franchise. It is something built over time, rooted in upbringing, sharpened through responsibility, and confirmed by the trust of the locker room.
“I enjoy trying to set the table,” Brunson said. “I enjoy being able to lead by example and lead vocally, as well. But it’s the chemistry with my teammates that allows me to do so.”

Brunson understands that leadership only works when people accept it. A captain can talk all he wants, but if the group does not believe him, it is just noise. With the Knicks, Brunson’s voice carries because his game backs it up and because his teammates know he is not asking for anything he will not do himself.
That is why his leadership fits New York so well. It is tough without being fake, confident without being loud for no reason, and demanding without feeling selfish. He can take over a game, but he also talks about setting the table. He can be the star, but he still frames leadership as chemistry.
For the Knicks, that balance has become the identity of this run. They play with Brunson’s calm, his edge, and his stubborn belief that the next possession is always winnable.
Leadership can mean a lot of things in basketball.
For Jalen Brunson, it means being the person everyone can follow without ever having to ask why.
