Gary Payton Throws LeBron-To-Warriors Gasoline On The NBA’s Loudest Fire

Gary Payton has never been confused with a man who whispers around a microphone, so when he looked at LeBron James’ uncertain future and pointed straight toward the Bay Area, subtlety was not invited.

Payton said on Nightcap that he does not believe James is likely to leave the Lakers, but added:

“There’s a good shot if he leaves, he’s going to Golden State. I’m telling you he’s coming to Golden State if he leaves.”

The timing is perfect for chaos. James just finished his 23rd NBA season with the Lakers being swept by Oklahoma City, then said it was too soon to determine his future. He is entering unrestricted free agency after making $52.6 million this season, and said he needs time to reflect with his family before deciding what comes next.

Golden State is the fantasy destination because it sounds like basketball fan fiction written at 2 a.m.: LeBron James and Stephen Curry, finally together, chasing one last ring while Steve Kerr tries to solve the sport’s most impossible retirement-home superteam puzzle. The Warriors have just brought Kerr back on a new two-year deal, and their entire timeline remains tied to maximizing what is left of Curry’s championship window.

Would it be complicated? Absolutely. It would require financial gymnastics, roster sacrifice, ego management, and probably a calculator with smoke coming out of it. But as an idea, it is irresistible. LeBron in Golden State would not just be a signing. It would be the NBA’s final boss level: the league’s all-time leading scorer beside its greatest shooter, two dynasties merged into one last absurd experiment.
