VJ Edgecombe Shines As Early ROTY Favorite After Historic Start

Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe is rewriting the record books. And he’s only three games into his NBA career. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft has delivered a stunning debut stretch, becoming the first guard in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists through his first three games.

Edgecombe’s early performances have been incredible. He opened his career with an impressive 34-point outing against the Boston Celtics, the most points in an NBA debut since Wilt Chamberlain and the most ever by a 76ers rookie in their first game. He followed it up with two more efficient, high-impact games, that highlighted not just scoring ability but also court vision and defensive awareness.

What’s striking about Edgecombe isn’t just the stats, it’s the maturity. At just 19 years old, the Bahamian-born guard plays with the composure of a seasoned veteran. His shot selection is disciplined, his off-ball movement is sharp, and his communication on defense has impressed coaches and teammates alike.

“He’s not just playing well—he’s controlling the game,” said Sixers head coach Nick Nurse. “That’s rare for a rookie, especially a guard.”

With his historic stat line and consistent impact, Edgecombe is quickly becoming the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. While other top picks like Cooper Flagg have shown flashes, Edgecombe’s combination of production and polish is setting him apart for now.

If Edgecombe continues at this pace, he could not only secure Rookie of the Year but also help lead the Sixers back into Eastern Conference contention. With Paul George fully, and Joel Embiid partly sidelined to start the season, Edgecombe has stepped into huge role immediately and delivered under pressure.
