The Los Angeles Lakers will continue to navigate the early stretch of the 2025–26 season without their cornerstone, LeBron James.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James is expected to remain out for approximately three more weeks as he recovers from a right-sided sciatica injury.
“I’m told that we’re still in the range of about three more weeks before he would be targeting a return sometime in mid-November,” McMenamin said during an appearance on NBA Today. “I have been told by multiple sources over the last several days that his rehab and all of the process to get back to that return date are moving in the right direction”.
Sciatica, which affects the lower back and legs, can cause significant discomfort and mobility issues. This marks the first time in LeBron’s 21-year career that he has missed the start of an NBA season. He did not participate in preseason games and has yet to suit up for the Lakers in regular-season action.
Despite James’ absence, the Lakers have managed a competitive start, leaning on the further emergence of Austin Reaves. However, the team’s depth has been tested, with additional injuries to Luka Doncic, Gabe Vincent and Marcus Smart compounding the challenge.
James’ return will be pivotal as the Lakers aim to build momentum in a stacked Western Conference. His presence not only boosts scoring and playmaking but also stabilizes the team’s defensive schemes and late-game execution.
If the current timeline holds, LeBron could return during a mid-November home stretch, potentially facing teams like the Timberwolves or Spurs. The Lakers medical staff continues to monitor his progress, and updates are expected weekly.
