It’s impossible to overlook what Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has become. An MVP-caliber guard and the undeniable leader of an Oklahoma City Thunder team pushing through a hard-fought NBA Finals run. As the spotlight intensifies, so do the comparisons.
During a recent podcast appearance, former NBA guard Lou Williams reflected on his experiences alongside two iconic guards, Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant, drawing a compelling parallel.
“I’ve been with A.I. for 4 years of my career. I was with Kobe for 2.5 years of my career. [Shai] is more Kobe than he is A.I. because of his approach.”
“Is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander more A.I. or is he more Kobe?” – Bobby Portis

The comparison isn’t random or shallow, just as Williams laid it out. From game planning, work ethic, mentality, and preparation, to the things he didn’t mention like midrange scoring, footwork, being a closer, and creating offense through all four quarters. All of those support his case.
But there’s a difference between having a similar approach and building a similar legacy. Iverson is more within reach. Kobe, with five titles, multiple All-Defensive selections, and a reputation as one of the greatest scorers the game has ever seen, remains the loftier comparison. But if SGA and the Thunder keep rising, it’s fair to wonder how close he can really get.
