Dwyane Wade Opens Up About Leaving Florida To Protect His Family: “I’m Such A Proud Father”

NBA legend Dwyane Wade has long been celebrated for his accomplishments on the court, but in recent years, he’s become just as admired for his role as a father and advocate. In a recent interview, Wade revealed that his family’s decision to relocate from Florida to California was driven in part by the state’s increasingly hostile policies toward the LGBTQ+ community—particularly in light of his daughter Zaya’s journey as a transgender teen.

Wade, who spent the majority of his Hall of Fame career with the Miami Heat, explained that while he still holds deep affection for the city and its fans, remaining in Florida was no longer an option.

“My family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there,” he said, referencing the wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation passed in the state in recent years.

Among the most controversial laws is the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which restricts discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Additional measures have targeted gender-affirming care and public accommodations for transgender individuals, creating what Wade described as an unsafe environment for his daughter and others like her.

Despite the backlash and scrutiny that often comes with being in the public eye, Wade has remained steadfast in his support for Zaya.

“I’m such a proud father, and I try to post my kids,” he said, emphasizing that his parenting is rooted in love, not fear.

He and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, have been vocal advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, using their platform to amplify messages of acceptance and inclusion.

Wade has also spoken about the importance of surrounding Zaya with a community where she can “blossom and grow”—a key reason the family chose to settle in California.

“We felt that California was a place that would allow her to be accepted and become her,” he told Parents magazine.

Wade’s decision to prioritize his family’s well-being over convenience or nostalgia is a powerful example of leadership beyond the hardwood. As he put it,

“I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”

His actions have resonated with families across the country navigating similar challenges, many of whom lack the resources to relocate but share the same desire for safety and dignity.

In a time when public figures are often hesitant to speak out, Wade’s unwavering support for his daughter—and his willingness to challenge systemic injustice—continues to inspire.
